Their wolves are howling at the moon. Their human halves are on different planets.
Takhini Wolves, Book 1
Lone wolf Shaun Stevens’s automatic response to the words “happily ever after”? Kill me now. Yet with all his friends settling down he’s begun to think there may actually be something to this love-and-roses crap.
One thing’s for sure his dream mate will have to out-cuss, out-spit and out-hike him. So he never expected the one to push his forever button would be a blue-blooded Southern debutante with a voice as dark and velvety as her skin.
When Gemmita Jacobs steps off the plane in Whitehorse, Yukon, it’s about more than her caribou research project. It’s her declaration of independence from an overprotected upbringing. Except there’s something in the air she can’t quite define—something that unexpectedly rouses her mating instincts.
Moments after their eyes lock, the deed is done—and done thoroughly. When the pheromone dust settles, though, all the reasons they don’t belong together become painfully clear.
It’s enough to make a wolf learn a whole new set of cuss words…
Warning Two strong wolves getting exactly what they deserve. Includes wilderness nookie, shifters being naughty in public places, the Midnight Sun as a canopy for seduction and grizzly shifters on the loose. Oh, and don’t forget the sarcasm.

Okay, when I read the synopsis for this book I was expecting something much more wild and dirty, with much more angst between the two main characters. Instead, this story turned into something I merely tolerated and was surprised I finished. The whole thing went right downhill when the author seriously used the phrase "like whoa." I thought this novel was an adult read paranormal romance, but apparently it was really a YA read, which I'm not interested in. Then there was the whole drunken meeting. While this concept was funny in theory, it was rather anticlimactic and not at all sexy.
I expected a lot more heat from the synopsis, but everything fell short. The sex was lackluster and rather boring, which made me snort when it was referred to as sheet melting or whatever such nonsense. Shaun became a sniveling shadow of his former self and Gem was ridiculously self-centered and judgemental. Evan is supposed to be Alpha, but he doesn't seem to control anything. He doesn't like the female attention, but doesn't do a damn thing to stop it or any other misbehaving beings in town. Caroline is a human who propositions Evan, but there's not a lot of explanation of what is in it for her besides sex.
There was a ridiculous amount of narration considering not much actually happened. The author really enjoyed running things together without any pause or fanfare, meaning the reader gets jumped from POV to POV and forward in time with no more notice than the start of the next paragraph. It's one thing when this happens with the MCs, but then she jumps from the MCs to Evan and Caroline, who are not even in the same place. It almost gave the feeling of the entire novel being a run on sentence. Even the end of the book was treated to the same, without even a paragraph break.
All in all, I was not impressed with this story and have no desire to read more from this series or the author. The only reason I gave this story an extra star was because I finished it without skipping more than a few sentences or paragraphs at a time. Don't waste your time or money.

Black Gold Takhini Wolves Book 1 edition by Vivian Arend Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
Ms Arend makes book series that I can't seem to get enough of. This one is no different. I was a goner from the very first page and the interest lasted the entire book.
Geminta (Gem) is from the south, incredibly sheltered, but looking for adventure up north. What she didn't expect was to find her mate on her very first day in town. It seems that her hard win freedom will not last since her mate seems to be almost as pushy and Alpha as her father.
Shaun can't believe his luck. He's been lamenting over the fact that he didn't have someone special and then he meets her after a particularly bad night of drinking. He manages to say everything wrong as his northern ways don't match his genteel southern mate.
Of course they figure it out, but what a joy to read about the process. And the sex scenes? Have mercy! I'm ready for the next book!
Let me start with the good. I loved Gem. She is spunky, funny and tough. She was an unexpected bright spot in the story. For her to be a pampered princess she really had a lot of strength and determination. Shaun was endlessly fun. He is listless in most of his life but finding Gem is the spark he needed. Their chemistry and interaction was great.
Now what I hated. This was two stories in one. There was an over abundance of words for no real reason. The story could have been streamlined. It was needlessly long for no real reason other than word count.
Many details can be consolidated to get to the more interesting wilderness scenes. The Evan/Caroline story was pointless.
May contain Spoilers.
Another atypical Shifters book. Filled with bear shifters and wolf shifters and other shifters are mentioned. Evan, the Alpha, runs a bar attached to a decent hotel which his pack, the Takhini wolves, own. He runs the attached bar like a dive with bears getting so falling down drunk, his wolf bouncers knocks them out easily. He finds this funny. Shaun, the strongest wolf next to Evan, is a helicopter pilot who likes living in the wild and drinking. He began to realize something is missing in his life, a mate. Evan gives Shaun moonshine which makes him drunk out of his mind. What happens to a wolf metabolism burning so high that they can't get drunk?
Gemmita Ellen Louise May Jacobs, liked to be called Gem, is a black southern beauty who comes to Whitehorse, a town in the Yukon, for a research project. She smells her mate while paying homage to the Alpha, Evan. He knows he's not her mate but allows her to sit in his lap and kiss all over him before she realizes it not him. Shaun had just left his office so Evan knows who Gem's mate is - it's Shaun's lingering smell that has Gem lusting after her mate.
Gem's father is a multi-billionaire who owns a fourth of Georgia. Werewolves aren't known there. Wolves are shot in sight there so they live on a large compound and don't mix with the population. Their society is very structured. However even powerful, wealthy wolves interact with other wealthy businessmen - they just do it in the estate. Because of this, Gem, schooled for years in proper etiquette, knows how to act in polite society and is pretty shocked at what she's seen in Whitehorse so far. Her father is so overprotective if her, that she's home schooled meaning teachers come to ger. She in college - the professors and other students come to her. She has talked her father into allowing her to take this trip to finish her college science course, if course with bodyguards.
Her room just happens to be attached to Shaun who is passed out in his room. Gem keeps smelling her mate and proceed to undress and dance. Her scent awakens hims, he comes into her room and they meet each other - mates. You know what happens but no marking.
Shaun just happens to be her helicopter pilot and, if course he allows no one else to be her guide. The rest of the story deals with their trip into the wild to study caribou and attending intrigue and drama.
Because of what happens in the wild, Gem's father arrives in Whitehorse to get his daughter. Once Gem and Shaun arrive back, he realized they're mates. The only problem is Shaun thinks Gem and her father will want him to live in the south.
Other characters in the book is Caroline, a human, who knows about the wolves because she has half siblings who are shifters. She works in the hotel but wants Evan supposedly to keep peace caused by unmated women who wants Evan. She presents Evan with a plan and surprisingly he accepts even though he knows she's not his mate.
Caroline and Evan are more interesting than Shaun and Evan. The goosebumps from one POV to another with no warning. There are several grammatical errors, Mostly missing words. This book is the first in an series of four books. This was a pleasant read that I had to force myself to finish - I fell asleep several times before finishing. It was not interesting enough for me read the others in this series.
